Man in the Shadows

A leader, even now, unknown to himself,
is waiting his moment on the world stage!

I believe our beloved President Jefferson Davis said best, when he stated, "We feel that our cause is just and holy; we protest solemnly in the face of mankind that we desire peace at any sacrifice save that of honor and independence; we ask no conquest, no aggrandizement, no concession of any kind from the States with which we were lately confederated; all we ask is to be let alone; that those who never held power over us shall not now attempt our subjugation by arms." --- President Jefferson Davis - 29 April 1861.
.
All successful movements throughout history had one commonality, a strong leader, and in modern times it is no different, if Confederates are to be successful, there must arise from among us, a man who can lead the entire Confederate Cause.  Such a leader will indeed arise, all in due course of time!  Some of us might wonder, in common everyday terms, what kind of man this coming leader might be; the below article just might provide some small answer.

\"A Leader shall arise, one holding no desire to walk in the halls of power!"

A question was once asked of me in past time: "Do you really believe some special Confederate National Leader will really come? Who is he, and what will he be like?"  The following is my answer and it is for the reader to decide what he or she thinks on the matter, I am just the messenger.  When it comes to personally identifying him I could not do so at this time, but none-the-less within every generation there normally exists such people.  He would be a man who does not know he has been chosen.
.
We’re speaking here of a man who will be thrust forward by circumstances beyond his control.  His date with destiny caused as it were by a divine hand. He will be loved and at the same time hated more then any man alive. His very life will be threatened and he will likely be wounded for the cause, but he will still finish his work. No doubt he would be a scholarly man who looks at politics more as a statesman, then in a partisan manor.  He would likely not be a doctrinaire politico such as our present political candidates.
.
He would be a man on a mission for which he did not choose!  He would no doubt be a mild mellowed man whose countenance would turn to fire, when placed in the spotlight and upon the world stage.  When his time in the spotlight of history ended, he will become a legend and children will tell stories about him for generations yet unborn.  He would no doubt be a family man more comfortable with coaching the little league baseball team, or working in church activities.
.
I see such a man as coming from outside the inter-circle of the known movement leadership; due to his mannerly, kind and generous nature he is normally taken for granted.  Few such men throughout recorded history knew before hand, they have been chosen by the Almighty God to return history to its proper course.  If he were a College or University Professor, he would be an intellect who is revered in a quiet and respectful way.  He would be the type who could mesmerize the student’s body, in a way very few men could.
.
He would go about his work seemingly not caring for any personal attention or reward.  This man will have a pleasant personality, easy to get alone with, who is rarely if ever confrontational toward others.  If I were going to set out and look for such a man, I'd begin in the very places such men are always found, rendering service to their fellow man.  He would no doubt be found working far more hours, and then his paycheck could justify, and is driven by his kind and stately nature.
.
He might be the merchant who would risk business as well as profit for the sake of being fair and generous, caring for the needs of his customers more then himself.  I'd ask myself who is this man that reaches out to other people, yet expects and seemingly receives so very little in return.  I'd look and observe what type of man is there among our numbers, whom the children legitimately look up to with respect.  The man the young people continually look to in time of trouble, simply because he indeed asks for so precious little, but gives so much.
.
He's a moral decent man whose character is beyond reproach.  Even his natural enemies find it difficult to find fault with him!  The man we are looking for will not be found on the list of who's who of the famous, nor has he any desire to walk in the halls of power. He is a quiet gentleman's gentleman who walks among us with his pleasant nature, quiet and unnoticed.  If he were ever invited to speak at a public engagement it would likely result from happen chance, or perhaps because a key note speaker is found absent and this man just happens to be available.
.
Even then, he would step forward only after being called out from the crowd!  But should such a man be spotted before hand, and the stage were set for his entry?  I can see him even now in my minds eye, under this type of scenario!  He would walk forward before the cameras and microphones, and then slowly he would look out at the crowd, as if to secure his position.  After a brief observation he would begin slowly and with great care!
.
A few moments later the atmosphere would change, and it would be as if the light of heaven's grace fell upon him.  This man already has all the prerequisites, waiting only for the spark of God's anointing to ignite a fire within him.  His extreme charisma and commanding presence would draw massive crowds, until what began as few meager souls would quickly expand into a throng of people.
.
Where no common agreement could be found before, now the mass of humanity flows together like a stream.  I believe even angles of heaven's grace will turn and look at the spectacle, and ask 'what is this O Lord?  At that moment history will pause, then alter its course forever!  Why hasn't such a man stepped forward before?  Because it would be natural for most men to consider doing so, like unto plunging into a whirlwind.
.
Still this man is out there somewhere, unknowingly waiting for his appointed hour and moment, when the hand of Almighty God will place him upon the world stage.  My friends and neighbors mark this down; this man will be neither messiah nor a superman as some have accused me of suggesting.  He will be just a man doing the will of Almighty God, who will have inspired him!
.
In my mind I can see this man who will one day lead us to the very doorstep of liberation as a nation and people.  But just as surely as he will came out of obscurity he will in like manor return, and melt back into the crowd once his mission is completed.  He’s out there all right and if there is some possible way, whereby the conditions could be arranged.  A scenario so devised, that it would quicken his arrival on the scene.
.
If I was a man of financial means and could travel at will, I am convince I could locate him and speak to him.  That is how sure I am as to his existence!  But it must be remembered he does not walk among the inter-circle, nor can he be found to be an associate of the boastful or the proud.
.
When the roll call of our leaders is sounded, he will not for the present be found numbered among them, but stands in the shadows unknown to himself waiting for a special moment, an hour and a time.  The next time you are in a crowd, turn and look at those around you, the man of whom I speak may be standing nearby.
.
God save the Confederacy

  1. "Governor, if I had foreseen the use these people desired to make of their victory, there would have been no surrender at Appomattox, no, sir, not by me. Had I seen these results of subjugation, I would have preferred to die at Appomattox with my brave men, my sword in this right hand." --- General Robert E. Lee - as told to Texas ex-Governor F. W. Stockdale
